Between 1888 and 1927 Eugène Atget meticulously photographed Paris and its environments, capturing in thousands of photographs the city’s parks, streets, and buildings as well as its diverse inhabitants. Christopher Rauschenberg spent a year in the late 90s revisiting and re-photographing many of Atget’s locations. Paris Changing features seventy-four pairs of images beautifully reproduced in duotone. Each site is indicated on a map of the city, inviting readers to follow in the steps of Atget and Rauschenberg themselves. The book concludes with essays by Clark Worswick and Alison Nordstrom, an epilogue by Rosamond Bernier as well as a portfolio of other images of contemporary Paris by Rauschenberg.

Title: Perfect
Review: What I loved about this was that it was clear about the intent and the project. It carried the spirit of Paris from Atget’s work, but had the author’s signature look to it as well. I loved that there were maps, and that it was reproduced well. A very helpful book for someone who is planning on visiting Paris. They will see the changes and no doubt come to appreciate the work of these photographers a century apart. .

Title: Little Has Changed
Review: If you have been to Paris or plan on going, this book is great. It is amazing how little the buildings have changed between the first photo and the current one. I myself would like to go to Paris again, and take photos at the same locations to add to the book and make it even more interesting when friends or guests pull it off the coffee table and look through it.

Title: Well done “then and now” but…
Review: We’re big Atget (and Paris) lovers and this book is more or less a tour of Atget’s tripod marks. The photos are good to very good but unfortunately no information is provided for any of the important “photographer details”: camera, film, lens (perhaps the most important detail in large format), exposure, etc.As a “Paris Then and Now” it’s OK, as a serious photography book it’s seriously lacking.

Title: Reminds me how much I love Paris
Review: Last summer I saw the Atget exhibit at the Bibliotheque Nationale, which was a marvelous passage through a lost time. This book matches some of those absorbing old photos with photos of the same location taken today. I think it’s a fascinating book and I can lose myself in the nuances while comparing the photos. This pasttime may not be to everyone’s taste, but I highly recommend the book to thoughtful people who enjoy looking at things.

Review: This book contains 75 pairs of images, showing how scenes captured by celebrated Parisian documentary photographer Eugene Atget looked in 1997/98, when Charles Rauschenberg re-photographed them. I bought the book after deciding to rephotograph some of Atget’s work myself, and it made working out which of the buildings and places were still recognisable very much easier. The places are shown also on maps, in groups of arrondisements, although the number are not always placed quite as accurately as they might have been.At the end of the book there is a short section of photographs that the author took “in the footsteps” of Atget – scenes he did not photograph, as far as we know, but in the same style and spirit. I think that Rauschenberg might have made more of that section, and to the extent that he photographed statuary in parks I think he was wasting his opportunity. That, however, is a minor quibble. This is therefore nothing like as comprehensive a reference work as, for example, Gautrand’s Taschen volumeEugène Atget: Paris (Bu), nor as artistic a selection as the Phaidon 55Eugene Atget (Phaidon 55’s) one made by Gerry Badger, but it is of value as a record of Paris’s evolution over the past 100 years, and an invaluable tool for the photographer who wants to re-photograph Atget today as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Review: Stabiler Einband, schöne Fotos, vom Druck her auch Top!
