“Sarah Jio weaves past and present in this eminently readable novel about love, gratitude, and forgiveness. I tore through the pages!”—New York Times bestselling author Christina Baker Kline

Two women are connected across time by the city of Paris, a mysterious stack of love letters, and shocking secrets sweeping from World War II to the present—for readers of Sarah’s Key and The Nightingale.

When Caroline wakes up in a Paris hospital with no memory of her past, she’s confused to learn that for years she’s lived a sad, reclusive life in a sprawling apartment on the rue Cler. Slowly regaining vague memories of a man and a young child, she vows to piece her life back together—though she can’t help but feel she may be in danger. A budding friendship with the chef of a charming nearby restaurant takes her mind off her foggy past, as does a startling mystery from decades prior.

In Nazi-occupied Paris, a young widow named Céline is trying to build a new life for her daughter while working in her father’s flower shop and hoping to find love again. Then a ruthless German officer discovers her Jewish ancestry and Céline is forced to play a dangerous game to secure the safety of her loved ones. When her worst fears come true, she must fight back in order to save the person she loves most: her daughter.

When Caroline discovers Céline’s letters tucked away in a closet, she realizes that her apartment harbors dark secrets—and that she may have more in common with Céline than she could have ever imagined.

All the Flowers in Paris is an emotionally captivating novel rooted in the resiliency and strength of the human spirit, the steadfastness of a mother’s love, and the many complex layers of the heart—especially its capacity to forgive.

“Heart-stopping . . . Fans of emotional, romantic stories set during World War II will enjoy this heartbreaking tale of love and loss.”—Booklist

Title: Lovely in every way!
Review: This is a book that I relished from cover to cover. The common technique today of alternating chapters between characters of different time periods actually works extremely well in this novel. So many possibilities, twists & turns! What a lovely tribute to dreamy Paris & the brave men & women who survived occupation and worse.

Title: Pleasant Surprise for a First-Time Sarah Jio Reader
Review: I happened to read — and also to listen to the audio version of — this book by chance. Really glad I did! Normally I wouldn’t be tempted to read a romance novel, no matter how well-reviewed or its historical setting; just not my genre. But now I’m definitely tempted to read more of Sarah Jio’s novels. Flowers/Paris has a very ambitious structure, and Jio manages to carry it off: Two protagonist narrators, separated by six decades, both speaking in the first person present tense — and one of them suffering from nearly complete loss of memory. One Jewish and tormented by Germans in occupied Paris, the other a refugee of a different sort (more than one sort, in fact), both occupying in succession the same grand Paris flat, one unwillingly (captive of a high-ranking Nazi) and the other uncomprehendingly in the fog of her amnesia. The reader ends up caring about both. The audio and printed versions complement one another nicely! A very skillful author at work, and well worth reading/hearing.

Title: Interesting WWII novel
Review: The setting is lovely. Celine works at a floral shop owned by her papa in Paris, France. Their small family is filled with love and loyalty, until the Germans invade their city and start deporting Jewish families. This story was really well written and the only downfall was how ghastly they made the German officers. Not all of them were ruthless. The main German officer who terrorizes Celine’s family is made to be awful. Some of the scenes including him are harsh and difficult to read. The other story-line is of present day and while it was unique it was not as intriguing to me as the story from the past.

Title: All the Flowers in Paris
Review: I am rating this novel 3 stars and not 4 due to my own notions about the construction of this novel. I had vowed to myself that I would not read another book about the German occupation of Paris in WWII, but I did. I’m also losing interest in the convention of two storylines set in the same place at different times—it seems over-used in novels now and not as interesting or innovative as the first few times I came across this approach. I felt the same way about discovering that a main character, Caroline, was suffering from amnesia and couldn’t remember who she was; surely a trite and overdone ruse to tell a story. So, three big marks against this novel in my view, yet I came to care about the characters and their respective stories. The novel was well-written and moved along at a good pace. And who doesn’t love a good story set in Paris? I ended up enjoying the book.

Review: I found it hard to tear myself away from reading this book. It is beautifully written. I loved the way the war time story of Celine and Cosi fitted so well with the story of the present day character, Caroline. It seamlessly worked from one story to the other without it being choppy or disconnected, as stories like that sometimes are.I had just a couple of misgivings. First, I wondered why Celine’s father hadn’t given more thought to the safety of his daughter and granddaughter by leaving Paris when they could. Secondly, why didn’t Celine plan to at least disable, if not kill the nasty housekeeper who kept her and Cosi prisoner so that an escape would be possible. When the German officer was away for sometime, surely that thought must have come to her for the sake of her daughter and herelf. Celine was a wonderful Mum, but I think her protective instincts might have been stronger under such circumstances and who would blame her for fighting back? Otherwise I would have given the book 5 stars. It is so well written and involving.
