A Slice of Parisian Life: "A Table" More Than Just "Recipes"
There’s a certain magic that weaves itself into the fabric of a Parisian kitchen. It’s in the hushed rhythm of rolling dough, the fragrant steam rising from a simmering pot, the clinking of glasses as friends gather around a sun-drenched table. "A Table: Recipes for Cooking and Eating the French Way," penned by acclaimed chef and restaurateur, Claire Saffitz, doesn’t just offer a collection of recipes; it opens a window into this captivating world. More than a cookbook, "A Table" is an invitation to explore the heart of French cuisine, its inherent philosophy of simplicity, conviviality, and unyielding devotion to quality ingredients.
Saffitz weaves her narrative with an intimacy that feels like sharing a secret with a trusted friend. She dissects the complexities of French cooking with a refreshing honesty, revealing the techniques that may seem daunting at first but ultimately become second nature with practice. This is not a cookbook for the timid; it encourages experimentation, asks you to embrace imperfections, and celebrates the joyful chaos that sometimes erupts in the crucible of the kitchen.
But "A Table" transcends the technical. It delves into the soul of French culinary culture. Saffitz’s musings on the significance of sourcing the freshest ingredients, the art of building flavor through subtle nuances, and the importance of sharing a meal with loved ones become interwoven with practical guidance, creating a deeply immersive experience. You learn not just how to cook a perfect quenelle or a flaky croissant, but why it matters.
The recipes themselves are a testament to the French culinary ethos—simple yet elegant, robust yet refined. Classics like coq au vin and boeuf bourguignon grace the pages alongside lesser-known gems, showcasing the diversity of regional specialties. For those seeking a culinary adventure, Saffitz includes intriguing foreign companions, seamlessly blending the French tradition with world influences.
"A Table" is beautifully designed with mouthwatering photography that captures the essence of each dish. It’s a book you’ll want to keep at arm’s reach, leafing through its pages for inspiration, guidance, and a touch of Parisian magic.
Best Amazon Finds to Enhance Your "A Table" Experience:

- Le Creuset Mini Cocottes: Embrace the art of individual portions with these adorable ramekins, perfect for serving crème brûlée, gratins, or single-serving desserts.

- Linen Tablecloth: Amplify the convivial ambiance by setting your table with a luxurious linen tablecloth, adding a touch of French elegance to your gatherings.
These Amazon finds, combined with the wisdom and inspiration offered by "A Table," will transform your kitchen into a haven of culinary creativity, inviting you to embrace the art of French cooking and savor every moment in the company of friends and family.

Title: Wow factor food without complicated recipes or exotic ingredients!
Review: Words cannot express how much I love this cookbook! I am not a fancy French cook, so was a bit worried that the recipes would be too complicated or the ingredients would be impossible to find. Definitely not the case!Iâve had this cookbook for about a week and Iâve made at least 10 recipes plus quite a few cocktails. I even had a small gathering and cooked exclusively from this book. My friends loved it and have also ordered it!This is completely approachable, with easy to find (or substitute) ingredients, many of which you probably have on hand. The author also gives tips on how repurposing sauces, dressings & leftovers so you arenât left with a mystery jar in the fridge. And many of the recipes have similar ingredients so you wonât have a mostly full jar of spice gathering dust in the cabinet. The writing is witty and totally inspiring! The pictures will motivate you! Many of these recipes can be made in advance, which is perfect for entertaining. I made the carrot tatin pictured above (I promise, I didnât decimate the carrots, I used rainbow carrots so the purple ones look charred :)) in the morning and it still looked and tasted great several hours later when my guests arrived.Highly recommend!

Title: Elegant & très chic, à Table allows you to bring the magic of a Parisian table into your own home.
Review: From start to finish, this STUNNING and ELEGANT cookbook displays incredible creative mastery that has beauty, romance and magic layered throughout the pages from start to finish. This book makes you DREAM and gets you excited about the new world that awaits: a world in which we can all gather around a table again, rub elbows with friends and family, eat gorgeous things out of communal dishes, sip on wine for hours and linger on into the night. I’m completely in awe of the stellar aesthetics and impeccable photography, the food styling (done by the author herself!), witty language, the play with shadows and the presence of the female form throughout the book. What I most appreciate is the accurate and vibrant reflection of what modern day Paris looks like around the table (not only classic French, but also gives a fair platform to the myriad of influences (Middle Eastern, Asian, etc) that have made their way into the palates of the French. Each recipe has a “remarque,” Rebekah’s clever way to introduce a bit of historical context for each cocktail or dish while also adding a personal (and usually hilarious) personal anecdote. Excellent book to have around if you like to entertain and want to add that je ne sais quoi feel and magic into your days and nights! Recommend 100000%.

Title: A simple a beautiful look at French cuisine and entertaining
Review: I LOVE this cook book. I lived in France when I was younger just out of college. We had our sailboat in St Maxime and I had a French boyfriend from Brive la Gaillard (lived there too). That experience changed my entire life. I miss France dearly every day. This cook book has hand selected the perfect recipes to showcase life in France. From aperitif to dessert, Rules included, my favourite part. The thing l learned in France was that the rules of gastronomy are the most important. They are the way to experience life. It has been developed over centuries and they, in my opinion and probably the French as well believe it is perfect. I think this book reflects this in a kind and simple way doesnât intimidate. Right down to the photography. She has done a wonderful job of capturing la vie en France. I am an avid cook and I look forward to making all the creations and reliving my time abroad. ðððð·ð·ð

Title: Don’t even hesitateâadd to cart immediately!
Review: I had high hopes for this book and it did not disappoint. In fact, it managed to exceed my already lofty expectations. My husband and I have frequently turned to Rebekah Peppler’s previous hit, Apéritif, not just for its stellar (lower ABV) cocktails, but for all of the salty, snacky companion recipes. I had no doubt the recipes in à Table would hold up; what I didn’t expect was just how much I’d be swept away by the gorgeous photography (another Joann Pai hit) and LOL-inducing (and very thoughtful) commentary. Maybe it’s living under lockdown for the majority of the last year, but I read this book cover-to-cover in a single sitting the day I received it, letting myself dream of the days we can freely travel and enjoy the company of others safely again. In the meantime, you can cook and entertain your way through unfussy, approachable Paris life through à Table.

Title: A magical addition to your cookbook collection!
Review: This cookbook both inspired, and satisfied, my wanderlust for France! Rebekah’s voice invokes beautiful imagery (and the photos are gorgeous, too!), and is so welcoming that just read to this made me feel like I was joining in on her wonderful dinner parties. Every recipe I’ve tried – both food and drinks – has been a smash hit so far! The recipes are simple and approachable, and the flavors SO delicious, and comforting. I lived in France for a time, and often miss the ambiance of mealtimes (and the food, of course!), and this book brings that feeling right into my home.I’m looking forward to throwing my dream dinner parties, with this book to guide me!

Title: Want to make every recipe!
Review: It isnât often that I read a cookbook from cover to cover in a couple of days. More unusual still, that I want to make, and can, almost every recipe in this beautifully photographed and very appetizing book. Most recipes are relatively simple, with easy to access ingredients. I love the authorâs very personal writing. It is like sheâs talking to a friend. Highly recommended book!
