Middle-aged friends confront new beginnings & troubling ends in this smalltown saga debut novel by the creator of Designing Women and Evening Shade.

Woodrow McIlmore is leading the perfect life in Paris, Arkansas: married to his high school sweetheart, he has two wonderful children and a warm circle of family and friends. When Wood’s daughter announces that she wants to marry a college classmate, Wood is stunned. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg—her intended is the son of the woman who left Wood twenty years earlier, the free-spirited Duff. And so begins a tumultuous year in Paris, as Duff returns and familiar sparks fly with her old flame. Their rekindled passion affects not only Wood and Duff but also their good friends, as they must now all decide what in their lives is worth keeping and what needs to be thrown away.

Title: Southern as cornbread and molasses!
Review: Admittedly I am only on the third disc of this fantastic book on cd, but already I find that I can’t wait to get into my car and drive just so that I can keep listening! I have already burst out laughing on several occasions while listening, and the humor comes so unexpectedly that it really catches you off guard, especially when delivered by the Julia Sugerbaker-esque narrator, with her charming and authentic Southern drawl. I am thoroughly enjoying this book, thanks, in part, to the spectacular narration. I would recommend this book in any format, but I feel that if you read it yourself rather than go for the audio version you will be depriving yourself of one of the things that make this such a wonderful experience. Imagine, if you will, just reading the script of an episode of Designing Women. Much of the brilliance of the show was in the delivery of the lines by the individual characters. I think that this book is probably the same – it would be a really good read, but Cynthia Darrow’s narration makes it an absolutely fantastic gem of a book!

Title: Great audiobook reader brings this alive
Review: A good-hearted book, which I listened to as an audiobook. The reader, Cynthia Darlow, was fantastic, and brought all the characters to life – men and women. It was rather difficult to believe in such a tolerant town in the South, but if you can suspend that disbelief, it might make you feel more optimistic about the future.

Title: Loved this book!
Review: I don’t think you have to be southern to appreciate this book, but to really appreciate it you probably need to be from a small town. I felt like a grew up with these folks. I knew them all. I know all about the small town that is disappearing because of the big box store. It touched my heart. It made me laugh and cry. I loved it!!

Title: A Disappointing Book
Review: I’m certainly not an accomplished writer like the author, but I noticed on the first page that the fourth sentence began with “there are” and other sentences are in the passive voice – both “no nos” in most writing texts. But I liked the idea for the plot of the book until I realized that the two main characters are 40 years old and have a 22-year old daughter – it just seemed they should be older, but I kept reading. My main problem with the book is that with each character the author gives a long history of that character’s life and beliefs while I’m waiting for the main plot to begin. Also, the political agenda of criticism of Wal-Mart overpowered the potential interesting plot – when I got to the part about the nursing home and realized I was possibly going to read the life history of each person in it, I just turned to the back of the book to see how it ended. I do not believe that a girl raised in a little town in Arkansas would tell her parents that she and the boyfriend had consummated their relationship and she couldn’t wait to “do it again.”As a strong defender of “little town America” I liked the author’s viewpoint, but it just overpowered a possibly good plot. I rarely don’t finish a book, but I didn’t finish this one. Perhaps it’s that the introduction of each character required a complete background like a script for a television show or movie.

Title: The Inseparable
Review: The book was so realistic of American small towns that I found it hard to put down. You found yourself right there and felt this was really happening. When large box stores come in and pop and mom businesses end up going out of business is a common theme in American small towns. The people whose lives are entwined in their town and each others. It will keep you alert and wanting to see how these two events interminable. It is for mature readers.

Title: Life in a small town in deep South
Review: I liked the description of the social structure in the small town named Paris. The acceptance of all residents regardless of social, educational, physical or sexual levels or persuasion. And the struggle to keep the small shops from being destroyed from “progress and modernization”. Easy, fast and interesting reading.

Title: I think listening would be even better than reading for that reason
Review: This seems to be about the only book the author has written although she is well known for her many TV series. You laugh, you cry and you think. As I listened to this on of cassettes in the car, I was able to hear all the dialects etc . I think listening would be even better than reading for that reason. If you come across the book or an audio, please try it. I think all types of readers would enjoy.

Review: Wow. This was a great novel. I admit there were so many characters that I did skim some but nothing major to diminish my reading pleasure. I highly recommend.
