Fitbit continues to evolve its superb range of smart health connected watch with sport and health-oriented activity monitoring. Each new model benefits from the experience of Californian company founded in 2007 to improve performance, but also to become more elegant.
The Fitbit charge 3 presented in August 2018 is becoming a benchmark with an excellent quality / price ratio (149 $). It succeeds the Fitbit charge 1 and 2 sold more than 25 million copies!
Fitbit charge 3: a watch with an elegant and feminine design
A design designed for sport, but customizable to make it your everyday watch
The first evolution of charge 3 is a 30% larger screen than that of model 2 and fully tactile. A great idea that improves the readability of information that can be viewed at a glance. But also that makes the watch much easier to use.
The box dial is aluminum which guarantees excellent robustness, it is coupled to a scratch resistant Gorilla glass.
If you had 2, you will notice that the side button has also been changed. The Fitbit Charge 3 has annew touch button that returns a delicate vibration when you use it to navigate menus or to pause a workout or music. These technologies give a look more elegant, but also allow your watch to become waterproof.

The whole gives off a excellent perceived quality and solidity, even if I didn’t push the Review to make glass scratch or drop tests 2 meters high.

- Visualize in real time the heart rate zone you are in (Fat elimination, Cardio or Maximum) to get the most out of each session.
But in addition, you can manually launch the monitoring of a specific activity (running, cycling, swimming, walking, pilates, golf, yoga, jogging, martial arts, kickboxing, tennis …) to see your statistics in real time on the wrist.
- When you follow a traveling sport in real time (running, cycling, etc.), Fitbit Charge 3 automatically connects to your smartphone’s GPS to indicate your pace and the distance traveled.
- Innovation, which for me should be the standard, it is waterproof to 50 meters to allow you to practice all water sports, including diving. It can automatically count your lengths in the pool.
Two small faults for activity monitoring:
- The heart rate sensor automatically turns off in the water. It is therefore not possible to have a heart rate monitoring during swimming training. Because water interferes with the reliability of optical heart rate sensors. So no data displayed rather than indicating false values to us.
- The new touch screen makes it easier to read the measurements during the race, but it is necessary to swipe the screen to see live heart rate, average pace and time. Too bad, the screen is large, the ideal would be to be able to choose the data displayed on the health home.
In the end, the sensors are precise and the Fitbit Charge 3 is for me the most versatile sports tracking watch in this price range currently.

A health coach
The more you wear your watch, the more data it collects to help you progress. For this, it uses the automatic tracking SmartTrack of all your sports activities.
As with the Apple Watch, you will be invited to get up if you are inactive for too long during your day or you relax (guided and personalized wrist breathing sessions, based on your heart rate).
Sleep monitoring and sleep apnea diagnosis
Find out how much time you spend in each sleep phase (light, deep and REM) and benefit from personalized information to set up a more efficient sleep routine.
Fitbit could also use the SpO2 sensor to diagnose sleep apnea after approval from health authorities in the United States.
With this SpO2 sensor, the Charge 3 could give participants of the current Sleep Score Beta Review program very precise information on their state of health, diagnose specific situations and create alerts in the event of a problem.
Women’s health

One of the functions that can be used for all sports activities is Relax
An anti-stress and recovery breathing system based on your heart rate directly displayed on the Fitbit screen. No need to take out your smartphone and launch a dedicated app.
Like on an Apple Watch, you are guided by a small circle that expands when you breathe in and shrinks when you breathe out. If the breathing is well done and deep enough, small stars appear to congratulate you.
How to launch the Relax app on Fibit charge 3
- On your watch, tap the app Relaxed.
- The 2-minute session is the default option. Tap the gear icon or slide your finger to choose to do a 5-minute session. For Ionic and Versa, then press the Back button to return to the Relax screen.
- Tap the play symbol to start the session.
- Stay still and breathe deeply during the calibration period, which lasts between 30 and 40 seconds. The message “detecting your breath” will then appear on your screen.
- When prompted, follow the guide (the circle on your screen) and breathe deeply. You can close your eyes as your device will vibrate to indicate that it’s time to breathe in and out.
- After exercise, a summary will display your alignment (i.e. how closely you followed the breathing instructions), your heart rate at the start and end of the session, and how many days you have worked a guided breathing session this week.
Note: you cannot interrupt the session, but you can cancel it at any time. To exit, press and hold the Back button on your watch.
The app is fine, but it could be improved with all user feedback. Its advantage is that Fitbit has a single mobile app for all of its products. So if you supplement your equipment with a scales like the Fitbit Aria 2 (95 $).

Launched at the same price as charge 2, the Fitbit Charge 3 better finished and more efficient version is offered at 149 $.

A real improved version of the famous Fitbit charge 2. It gains autonomy, adds contactless payment, with a thinner design and becomes waterproof for swimming or showering.
All for an official price similar to the previous model (however which benefits from many reductions, the Fitbit charge 2 is now around 99 $).If you are looking for a truly expert watch for monitoring sports activities, go to the Garmin fenix 5 Plus (more budget too).
