Keep a journal to improve your relationship with yourself
Journaling, often known as keeping a diary, is a personal development technique that you can use to get to know yourself better, control your anxiety, or look after your mental health.
I can only advise you to attempt this approach if you want to strengthen your relationship with yourself, increase your sense of self-worth, and boost your confidence.
A cheap, easy approach that works!
The benefits of keeping a journal
Writing in a journal is like having a conversation with yourself. And like when you have a discussion with someone, you will get to know yourself, have a better relationship with yourself and trust yourself.
The more you practice journaling, the more you will be able to forgive yourself, listen to yourself and have compassion for yourself.
And that’s what we all want, right?
The plus is that your self-esteem is not the only one that will benefit from these moments with yourself.
Beyond the positive impact on emotions and the mind, keeping a diary could also be beneficial for our physique and especially our immune system if we believe this study.
How it is possible? The fact of writing, of exposing one’s feelings and feelings is a way of indulging and freeing oneself from one’s concerns.
As a result, we liberate ourselves from the stress and anxiety that can rule our bodies.
Your body will be stress-free, allowing you to unwind more easily, sleep soundly, and refuel your vitality.
As a reminder, sleep is crucial for health since it promotes the production of immune cells and helps regulate hormones.
Thus, sleep quality will be affected by anxiety, and hormones like adrenaline will stop the body from producing cells that will fight against infections that attack it (bacteria, viruses, diseases).
It’s magic, isn’t it?
And that’s why I’m fond of seeing holistic health , which includes well-being in all its forms.
Because yes, everything is connected.
How often do you keep a journal?
If journaling is not part of your habits, I can only recommend that you include it in your daily life.
As you have to go to sport regularly to see your body change, you will need to write regularly to see the benefits on your well-being and your self-confidence.
That doesn’t mean you have to journal every day – it can even be hard to maintain if you’re just starting out.
Start step by step and ask yourself the following questions:
What do I need to start?
The majority of us all have a notebook and a style lying around – if not, your next step will be to go buy some!
How often is it realistic for me to journal? As said above, it’s best to start small – for example 1-2 times a week and increase as you go.
When can I dedicate myself to this?
Setting a day and time (and planning it in your calendar) will increase the chances of you actually doing it.
As with any new habit, I highly recommend pairing your journaling session with a habit you already have in place.
For example, writing while your porridge is cooking or after taking the dog out.
It’s a technique that will make things much easier for you and will be more effective than saying “I’ll do it later” – because we all know how it ends haha.
Last thing: your journaling sessions should not last 40 minutes for it to be beneficial to you. You don’t have to force yourself to write 3 pages a day either.
Maybe start by setting yourself the goal of half a page, then a page and see how that feels. The first few times it won’t be easy, but you’ll see that you’ll get better with time.
There are also days when you won’t know what to write and that’s normal. Refer to the next section when this happens to you.
What to write in your journal
As I told you above, writing in a journal has no rules.
Some people write sentences, some scatter words, and others draw because that’s how they convey emotions.
Since we are specifically talking about self-esteem and self-confidence in this article, let me give you some tips and phrases to go in this direction.
How do you feel with yourself?
Even if journaling consists “only” of writing, it is not easy for everyone since it requires finding oneself with oneself and finding what lies deep within oneself.
If you don’t feel comfortable writing about your emotions, feelings and how you feel, start by describing your days, the events of the week or the months/years that have just passed.
- What have you done?
- Where did you go?
- Who did you meet?
- What did you eat, drink, watch?
- What are your best memories?
When you feel comfortable writing about mundane things that have happened in your life, you can start writing about yourself.
- What do you like about yourself?
- What do people compliment you on?
- Why do people ask you for help?
- What are you most proud of?
- What are your greatest accomplishments?
- What would you like to improve?
- What actions could you take to become a better version of yourself?
The next level would be to start exploring your emotions and feelings.
- How do you feel?
- Why do you feel like this?
- Since when do you feel like this?
- What would you say to a friend going through the same thing?
- How did you talk to each other today?
- How has it changed from yesterday / last week / last month?
- What aren’t you proud of?
- What can you improve?
Tip: Start by writing about positive emotions if that’s easier for you.
Prompt Journal for Self-Love
Journal Prompts are sentences/questions you can use to start writing.
These examples will be particularly beneficial for developing your self-esteem and self-confidence.
1. What do I like about my body?
2. What do I like about my way of thinking?
3. What do I like about my personality?
4. What compliments have I received lately? Did I believe them?
5. Why do people come to me for advice?
6. What makes me unique?
7. What don’t I like about myself? How can I be grateful for these things?
8. What do I like to do?
9. What are my talents, gifts? What do I do easily?
10. What can I be proud of?
11. What difficult situations have I overcome?
12. What makes me feel good? How can I include more of these things in my life?
13. What would I say to the child I was when I was 10?
14. How would I behave if I loved myself more? How can I act more like this person?
15. How can I thank each part of my body?
Writing in a journal is like having a confidant, only better.
Because with a person, it can sometimes be difficult to open up. We can be afraid of disturbing, judgments or simply not knowing how to put into words what we really feel.
The newspaper will not judge you and it will always be there for you. In the end, the journal is only a reflection of what is inside you.
A good approach to express your emotions and become conscious of them is to write them down. When there is so much to take away, the majority of individuals do not even comprehend what is happening inside of them.
It’s even believed that if you can identify your feelings, you can accept them 99% of the time.
And even though we may not be aware of it, writing down our thoughts can help us make the right judgments, follow our intuition, and direct our activities.
I’ve found that keeping a journal has helped me become more assertive, acquire self-confidence, and see how certain life situations affect my mental health.
Writing has given me the strength to believe in myself, pursue my goals, and get out of toxic relationships. I learned to know myself deep inside me and to forge my personality.
As we can see the physical evolution with photos, the personal diaries allow us to see your mental and psychic evolution – I find that magic.
Again, writing should be something you enjoy, a tool to become the best version of yourself.
Some people prefer to deal with their emotions differently by going for a jog, seeing a psychiatrist, meditating or praying. Do what suits you best.
