Title: Tremendously satisfying, and heartfelt historical tribute to Paris
Review: I rarely write book reviews because reading is such a subjective enterprise that my comments may or may not have any bearing on whether another person enjoys the same book. This book, however, deserves all the praise that I can give to a work of history. It manages to be both eminently readable and comprehensively researched, both sweeping and surprisingly concise (how does one manage to distill WW II into 10 pages??), and truly stands as a heartfelt tribute to the city of Paris, and thereby to all of France itself.I have read other history books which attempt to similarly cover great spans of history, and they always end up seeming ponderous and labored. This book on the other hand allows the reader a very detailed exploration of the tumultuous history of one of Europe’s most famous cities, while providing a very emotional and moving story.Magnifique, and highly recommended to both Francophiles and history lovers alike.

Title: Excellent history but poor maps. Discusses buildings, bridges, streets, kings, mobs, revolutions.
Review: This is an excellent book on the architectural, social, and political history of Paris. The âSeven Agesâ referenced in the title are:* First, an introduction to early Roman Lutetia and Medieval Paris; then various âAgesâ or historical eras:* Philippe Auguste 1180 – 1314;* Henri IV 1314 – 1643;* Louis XIV 1643 – 1795;* Napoleon 1795 – 1815;* Second Empire and The Commune 1815 – 1871;* Treaty of Versailles 1871 – 1940;* De Gaulle 1940 – 1969.The text discusses new construction in the form of major palaces, churches and cathedrals, streets and boulevards, private hotel particulaires or mansions, fortifications and walls, and Seine River bridges. Interwoven in all this are personal stories of Kings, Cardinals and and Bishops, mobs and revolutions, revolting Dukes and Counts, would-be dictators, architects and builders, finances and taxes, and the development of a centralized state. Each âAgeâ is accompanied by a sketch map depicting the boundaries of Paris and comparing them to modern Paris. Major street routes are indicated. In my opinion, this is the significant weakness of the book. The maps do not show any of the major items referenced in the book such as palaces, churches, significant private mansions or governmental buildings and officialsâ residences, or renowned structures. No Seine River Bridges are shown except as part of a major street and the names of the bridges are not called out. No street names are called out. Even significant historical areas such as Marais and Montmartre are not indicated. None of the Paris âPlacesâ are indicated. This is the reason why I gave the book a 4-Stars rating instead of the 5-Stars it probably otherwise deserves. If you are intimately familiar with Paris this probably doesnât matter but for those readers not blessed with a detailed knowledge of Paris it is very frustrating.

Title: I cannot wait to go to Paris . . .
Review: This book is not one for skimming! Horne’s beautifully written masterpiece is indeed wordy – but in the best way. Each page is a prosaic journey into the sights and smells of Paris over the centuries as its streets were transformed from medieval quagmires to modern works of art. The “seven ages” themselves are helpfully subdivided into digestable sub-categories, accompanied by headings to keep the reader on track (and there’s always the index for those moments when a name pops up that you remember from an earlier chapter but can’t quite place). The cast of characters, both well-known (the Napoleons) and more obscure (Philippe la Bel), is devilishly fascinating. I have savored this book for several weeks now, picking it up when I have a few moments here and there to escape into Paris’ past. I cannot recommend this book enough – it has made me even more excited about my upcoming trip to Paris this May!

Title: More visuals would help!
Review: A book about the changing city of Paris over the centuries sure could use more detailed maps and more images of Paris through the Ages. One can cross-reference his descriptions with a good guidebook for photos, but not if the place or name has changed. I was at a loss to locate many places in my guide and Paris map. The maps of the city at the beginning of each chapter are really really bad (disclosure: I am a cartographer) with little detail, few roads (only the “new” ones of that age – whose idea was that?) and NO labels on those roads. Useless, really. As for the text, it is very good, and just casual enough to be interesting. Coverage of some periods is uneven as others have said, but if you already have a passing knowledge of French history it is full of fascinating bits that you won’t likely find elsewhere. Very good on social history; Parisians over time can, it seems, be both fiercely resilient and disturbingly shallow at the same time. And income inequality has deep roots here.Though it could have been a great book, it was still a good one, and served my needs as a (fairly) thorough chronicle of past life in the City of Light.

Title: A superb, in-depth, review of Paris and French history.
Review: I have been itching to get my hands on this book for ages. It has not disappointed. Alistair Horne writes in brilliant, fluent, and surprisingly witty prose which heightened my enjoyment of the book. Over the years I have read many books on the history of Paris and few have come close to the depth of Horne’s rendition is- how he touches on the interesting practice of burning cats in the Place du Greve to how he explains the invasion of the Vikings. Obviously he truly knows what he is talking about and it was wonderful to enjoy such a informative while still historical book.

Review: Alistair Horne has made a life study of France, its history, its people, its culture and its fine points and foibles. Insanely well-researched, well-written, and highly readable. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Perhaps the ultimate compliment to a writer is that I cannot wait until I read several of his other books. If you want to know France, find his books.
