Title: Won’t play wrong format
Review: When I bought this, I never thought to look at the format, never having to do so in the past. When I tried to play it, it gave the message that it wouldn’t play, that I should check the region, whatever that was. I had to get on the internet to find out about regions and formats. This DVD is only for region 2, and in PAL format, so it is useless. Amazon should put in large bold letters when a product isn’t playable in the US.However, I was able to play it on my computer using windows media player and changing the region. The movie was excellent and the music superb. Now to get a CD of the music.

Title: Historical drama
Review: In actual historical fact Hitler intended for Paris to be flattened – Notre Dame, Eifel Towed, Arc de Trump all to be destroyed. This is a fictionalized but not too inaccurate of how that did NOT happen. Just about everyone in Hollywood or french cinema got at least a cameo. Newsreel footage is frequently edited in and usually do seamlessly that you don’t notice the transition. Reportedly the director had ti submit every scene to De Gaul for approval so this the result could be considered tainted with French propaganda. That does not diminish the fact that this is a very satisfying movie,

Title: A good movie about an important historical event
Review: This review is regarding the DVD version of the movie that I just purchased from Amazon. This is really a history buff’s movie as it deals with the liberation of Paris in WWII and qualifies as a “docudrama”. Real people are depicted by actors performing as the actual participants did during the war. This is a good quality copy of an important movie. For younger viewers, I would point out that most of the people playing parts in the movie, depicting real people who fought in the war, were alive when the actual events occured. Some of the actors may have been only children during the war itself but I am sure that they took a lot from their own memories to help play their roles in the film. Since most of the cast were French actors and actresses, it is possible that some were in Paris during the occupation and liberation! I never read an accounting of that possibility but it certainly is feasable. This movie was produced 20 years after the real events and the participants had close emotional ties to the period which adds to the authenticity of their performances.I saw the movie when it was first released in the ’60s’. It was a four hour film then. I later bought the VHS tape set of two tapes that include most of the original movie. When I watched this DVD version, I realized that about a quarter of the movie is not there! That is the nature of the different “cuts” that any movie goes through for its different markets. I would hope that someday, a release is made of the whole, original movie. Since it is composed of depictions of many people performing unrelated actions, editing out some of those stories or parts of them is almost unnoticeable. That is why I don’t mind too much the loss of over an hour of the film. For someone who has never seen the film, they will never notice the difference. Still, I would love to see the whole movie again.
