Title: Great reading
Review: I couldnât put it down so thatâs why I gave it a five – however it is obviously a part of a series and the author didnât give enough background to make it entirely a stand alone – just hints which indicated other stuff had happened- I did order the first book in the series from my library and if itâs good I may buy more of the series

Title: Good, but not the best in the series
Review: Good entry in the series. I have read all of the Hugo Marston books and while this one is not the best I think it is up to par with many of the others. The writing style is good it is the mystery in this one that I had a problem with. In the very beginning of the book you are basically told who did it, whereas in the others there was a real build to find out who did it. Granted there is a twist toward the end that tells you the “why”, but it just didn’t hold me as well once was pretty sure I knew who had done it. The others in the series are much more page turners, where this one is more an easy walk through the pages. I like the characters in the series and his writing style, so I would recommend these books, I just hope the next one is another page turner like the earlier ones.

Title: One of my favorite series
Review: I look forward to each new edition to the Hugo Marston series. Embodying much of the mental acuity of Sherlock Holmes with great social skills and character, I forget he is a book character. For some reason as I read I picture the British actor Michael Kitchen (Foyle’s War). His good friend Tom alternates between being an enigma and an annoyance. Love the transgender French detective.. the series abounds with interesting and well developed characters and unusual plots. Can’t wait for the next installment

Title: Improvement in style and story from the reluctant matador
Review: One of the most maddening things about recent Hugo Marston novels is that a blazingly obvious clue is somehow overlooked by Hugo, the cops and everyone else until near the end when, aha!, it somehow resurfaces. In this case, author Pryor tells us after the librarian’s murder about a book left leaning against the wall outside his basement office…which has obvious significance, yet everyone loses their marbles and no one sees how it figures into the otherwise puzzling crime. Pryor does this same thing again in the Sorbonne Affair, when we are left practically yelling at the page about the obvious source of “mystery” DNA found at a crime scene. I would say that none of the surprise endings of these books is anything other than a relief that the blatant clues have been rediscovered.

Title:
Review: Similar to some other reviewers, I found this story hard going. Laboured. Ok there was a story line in the book, but honestly it was buried, hard to decipher and then it came out at the end without coming together. Clearly only Hugo, nobody else and not the reader could see where it was all heading, the clues were too well hidden. At times the book felt like a travel brochure for Paris, but didn’t weave into the story in a meaningful way.1 star for Hugo, 1 star for Paris and a final star for the ever delightful Claudia.
