Title: Great, with one reservation.
Review: First the “great” part: it represents an accessible survey of the Second Empire and the building of Paris in the context of the new, Platonism historiography first described in the book Human Sin or Social Sin.The key insight is that the rush to nature is part of an overall trend toward the people and the appetites as predicted by Plato in his model of the degenerate regimes in The Republic. Bizarre but true. This model is the broadly accepted one among liberal arts elites. It is also embraced by film director Patty Jenkins in her new film Wonder Woman, 1984.Another way of framing it is as the inversion of Platonism with the low and the body ruling over the form creating faculty of the mind. The author, Mary McAuliffe refers to this on page 134 when she describes how “But [Manet] was far more of a bomb-thrower than his was willing to admit, since he was in fact attempting to turn on its head the salons established hierarchy of acceptable subjects.” Many studies now describe the era and the avant-garde in this way, as the inversion of Platonism.The “bad” part is the common technique of insinuating antisemitic innuendo or what I call “the Jewish conspiracy theory” by only showing the possibly negative outcomes of, in this case, the role of Jewish bankers in the creation of Paris.This small infraction aside, great and easy read on the subject.

Title: Feast for the Mind and Heart
Review: The reader of this book receives gifts far more than the somewhat academic title would suggest. Paris in the era of Napoleon III is filled with astonishing drama, and the author takes every measure to create an account that, far from being dry and pedantic, flows with breezes and storms, clouds and colors of deep emotions. McAuliffe writes social history the way it should be written: as detailed and evocative as a masterful novel yet, with uncompromising logic, connecting people and events across broad expanses of space and time. The reader is both in the room, hearing the conversations and seeing the attitudes, and flying overhead, looking down upon not only Paris but all of Europe, the Mediterranean, and extending down to Egypt and even more distant regions. One can hope that this book will serve as a bright example for other scholars to follow. And for lovers of art there is perhaps no better window into the world of the impressionists.

Title: The Creation of Paris
Review: Paris, City of Dreams tells the interesting story of Parisian politics, culture and urban development during the reign of Napoleon III. While best enjoyed if you’ve been to Paris (I haven’t), it did fill a lacuna in at least my understanding of history.According to McAuliffe, the Paris celebrated today was largely the creation of the otherwise ill-regarded Napoleon III and his personal architect Georges Haussmann. Before this time Paris was a near facsimile of Dickens’s London: dirty with haphazard poorly built structures dotting a maze of thin roads.What Haussmann achieved was nothing short of extraordinary. Though he may have had little respect for historical structures, he nearly single-handedly created the City of Light. Demolishing here, stretching boulevards there, the Paris of the 1870s bore little resemblance to that of Hugo’s Les Miserables.McAuliffe repeatedly refers to how Haussmann’s Paris resembles that of today. Without experiencing Paris for yourself, it’s hard to appreciate these passages. But she blends in enough history of literature and the fine arts to keep any reader interested.A well-written book which tells an origin story too little known. If you are interested in French history it’s a book you’ll want to consider adding to your TBR.

Title: A very enjoyable read on a fascinating part of Parisian history
Review: This is an excellent book, very enjoyable, beautifully researched, written in an elegant and simple style with a pinch of humor between the lines. One can only regret that it lacks a clear map of what Haussmann did (and when), compared to what was before. Being born in Paris, I am familiar with the places, but even though… Yet, this should not prevent anyone to enjoy this book.

Review: I found this work wonderful. David Bellos’s amazing book on Victor Hugo’s Les Miserable mentioned this book on how Haussmann transformed Paris and so I ordered it. I don’t think there is any other book that explains in such engaging details how the Paris we all know came to be. For anyone who loves Paris, particularly those with knowledge of her many streets and districts, will find this book fantastic.

Review: The book is not what I expected although I grew to enjoy it. I believed that the book was to specifically be about the Huassmann transformation of Paris. It is so much more, as it speaks of the broader world of Paris during this time period.There are so many side journeys in the overall story that at times I got lost in them. Unfortunately, I found that a number of these side stories detracted from the overall intent of the book. They do help to fill out the broader set of events during this time however too many of these side journeys appeared to have been dropped in just because the author wanted us to know what neat things she found. There are so many cross-connected characters and events and I learned a lot about this time period but when I got to the end, the story just stopped. I would have liked to have had a clearer wrapup or synopsis of the main characters within the confines of the timeframe other than giving the impression that the story was over. I was left hanging and disappointed.
