Title: Paris History is a Gem but not for the Faint of Heart
Review: I finished reading all 500+ pages of Andrew Hussey’s book, as well as several interviews with him explaining how and why he wrote the book. I began reading Hussey’s gargantuan tomb as background for my own book on Paris. Interestingly, I finished writing my book while reading Hussey, and then I was able to enjoy the last half of Hussey’s history without the pressure of needing to be writing myself. I often read late at night, so I feel the essence of the text somehow went into my dreaming psyche. Often I found myself “floating over the streets of Paris” as I slept, somehow observing the history and locales of the Paris Hussey described in the pages I’d read. It seemed to have a great impact on me psychologically as well as intellectually. As far as the content essence of the book, I now understand Hussey was striving to depict the “street world” of Paris from its inception on the Île de la Cité through the Roman invasion, all the way through royal rule, past the revolution, on through the world wars and the Algerian conflict, to modern day Paris (up to 2004).Stylistically, I was first put off by Hussey’s preoccupation with whores, wars, famine, and survival struggles. But as I read, I realized Hussey was really describing foundational Paris, right down to the urine on the streets, the muck on the cobblestones, the bullet holes you can still see on buildings in the Marais, and above all, the resilient spirit of Paris that Hussey reveres despite some of its ugliness. He still lives and works there–and cherishes all of it–profane or transcendent.Originally as a tourist, I saw the white washed version of Paris: the gleaming Louvre, the shiny couture, the fancy cuisine. But as I got more comfortable and began to explore the real Paris, I’ve wandered off the tourist path and began to see the ancient Paris that Hussey believes is still speaking to us around Cafe Procope for example or in the arrondissements to the east or in the Marais. Moreover, Hussey sets up an explanation for the new Paris that we can witness in the off streets near Les Halles or around Bir Hakeim near the Eiffel, where diversity churns and cultural change is happening every day, here and now.I agree with the critics that the book is an important work representing a more realistic perspective on historical France. I personally enjoyed the fact that near the last third of the book, Hussey arrives at a similar conclusion as I have that Paris is unique (and inspirational) in that it is a microcosm of a historical and cultural evolution that is old, yet still churning. The spirit of Paris–old and now–can be savored by merely walking around and experiencing life there. Hussey’s book helps any casual reader (or scholar) to sift the contributions of Parisian culture. But its most important contribution may be that it lays a foundation for what is yet to come for future Paris as a cradle of evolving cultural power that perhaps ripples out to the whole planet. I’d highly recommend it.

Title: Fantastic, page-turning history that reads like a novel
Review: I can’t say enough good about this book! I picked it up at Shakespeare and Company in Paris during my last visit, with the intention of boning up on some of the city’s history; I expected it to be more or less dry reading with occasional interesting bits. To my surprise, it gripped me from the first pages and had me reading as eagerly as a particularly good novel! I had already visited Paris a few times and had done some reading about it, so I knew I wanted to learn more about some specific sites and topics; this book did provide some very entertaining information about those, but it also introduced me to some new sites and facts that inspired me to get out to some corners of the city I would otherwise have missed. In particular, I found this book most helpful to have read prior to visiting the Musee Carnavalet, which is Paris’ museum showcasing the Revolution and other important events in the city’s history (as opposed to being an art-based museum). I would most especially recommend this book to experienced Paris travelers who want to dig a little deeper into the city’s secrets, but really it would be good for any intellectually curious traveler to the city–armchair included–who wants to delve into details not to be found in the tourist guidebooks. All in all: Fantastic book, great read, good investment!

Title: Anti-Christian Slant
Review: I have not yet finished the book, so if my opinion changes by the end of it, I will update my review accordingly. It’s an easy, enjoyable read for the most part. Yes, there’s a focus on the seedier side of Parisian history, but it doesn’t read like “trash for the sake of being trashy.” History often IS seedy, and a good history book should include it all (although judging by the other reviews by people far more knowledgeable than I, apparently the author’s history is hopelessly out of whack. Yikes.).What prompted me to write a review, however, was the eye-roll-worthy anti-Christian/anti-Catholic slant. Nearly every mention of anything even remotely related to the Church or its saints is delivered with a sarcastic, derogatory sneer. The spread of the Christian gospel is referred to as “propaganda.” Religious figures known for pious fasting are described as “anorexic.” (St. Genevieve, who somehow still managed to live 80 years despite all that “anorexia.” Good grief.) Any history of Paris is going to include a great deal about the Catholic Church–it can’t be helped!–but it’s really off-putting to keep stumbling over the anti-Catholic sneer every other paragraph or so.Only mildly entertaining. I wouldn’t recommend it to others and I’ll be avoiding the author’s work in the future.

Title: Peak beneath the tourist’s Paris
Review: Modern day Paris has been created for you the American tourist. Come and walk it with your backpack as if you were exploring the Grand Canyon. Visit the city which has been crushed by the weight of its own history into a Haussmann fronted crater. You will not have to worry about seeing any of the natives, except for the ones that are serving you, because they can no longer afford to live in the areas you will be exploring. … I pulled these thoughts from the book. As you can see it gives you a different view of Paris than the traditional guide book. The book provides a wealth of historical information to deepen your appreciation of what you see, and maybe even understand the truculent natives, if you got lost and accidentally came upon one.

Review: Heard the author speaking on Radio 4 following the recent Paris atrocities. His knowledge of Paris’s history was so interesting I bought this book which is a really good read with an excellent account of the history of this City. It is NOT about the recent attacks, having been published in 2006 but it does put things into perspective about Paris and would be excellent reading for anyone interested in history
