Title: Well-Written and Powerful Memoir
Review: An Accidental Parisian by Juliet Young is a memoir about Juliet, a young Canadian who sets out for Europe to practice her language skills and experience a different culture. The book is split up into three parts and chronicles Juliet’s early life, her first few visits to Europe, and how she ultimately ends up in Paris. The book explores many topics, including how Parisian society differs from what the author knew growing up and how life changes after a devastating blow like the loss of a loved one.As an expat myself, I can relate to a lot of what Juliet writes in her memoir. She captures the freedom, loneliness, exhilaration, and pain of moving to a different culture and settling far away from family.I also empathized with her inheritance situation, which is eerily similar to what happened in my own family. I’m so glad that Juliet goes into this topic in her book because I believe that inheritance theft is much more common than many of us realize.I thoroughly recommend An Accidental Parisian to anyone who has ever spent time in a different country or would like to learn more about expat life.

Title: Intensely candid
Review: If you are looking for a Peter Mayle style of French travel adventure, with a soupcon of cookery, An Accidental Parisian is not that kind of book. But, if you are looking for an honest experience of one womanâs transformation from Canadian to Parisian, look no further.Juliet Young came to Paris, as her title suggests, not by intention. She did move to France as a young woman for adventure, and a life different than the one from which she grew up in suburban Toronto. Her story begins with the exuberance of family life and the love for her parents. It ends on an entirely different note, of bitterness towards an older sister whom she says cheated her of an inheritance, as well as the loss of any family after the death of her parents.Young writes with the skill of a novelist to the point that I cannot help but wonder how she could recall the specific details of life, clothing, weather, all the incidentals that paint the background of her story. That story includes love affairs, and near love affairs, a chance restaurant meeting with Omar Sharif, the everyday work details of mundane office work. Her Paris is not that of the tourist, as Young describes the various living quarters she inhabited over the years, her working relationships, the haughtiness of some of the Parisians she encountered at work and elsewhere. She lingers over some of the more pleasant aspects of her years in France, from the cafes of Nice or Paris, the friendships which she shared during better times, or that helped through harder ones. But, in the final chapters the mood and narrative turn decidedly darker. Young writes with anguished detail of how she lost everything from an inheritance which she says was stolen by a sister whom she clearly detests. In a sense, the curtain is parted more than the casual reader may wish. That this is a catharsis for the Author is abundantly clear, as the book turns abruptly from one kind of narrative into another. On balance, Juliet Young quotes a French Proverb, in English, âRevenge is a dish served coldâ. While she may have been An Accidental Parisian, the intent and message of her memoir is no accident.

Title: Exciting!
Review: I loved reading The Accidental Parisian! Juliette describes her traveling, experiences, and troubles so clearly that you feel as if you’re standing right there, next to her. I could feel her pain at the death of her parents and the betrayal of a family member, I cringed when she would describe her relationship difficulties, but cheer her on. She uses such vividness when describing different scenes from her life, from the weather to the foods, and music she encounters that I felt that I was right there, with her.I really hope she writes a second book! It makes me want to check out Paris, just not live there. You’ll not regret reading this book.

Title: Loved Reading It
Review: I absolutely loved reading this book. I enjoyed it from the first word to the last, and enjoyed following the author as she described her family and her travels around the world. It was a quick read, and sucked me in. I almost couldn’t put this book down, and would recommend it to others to read as well. The best part is that the author made me feel as if I was there in the book with her. There weren’t any boring parts to this story at all.

Title: A refreshing treat that will leave you inspired
Review: Memoirs are one of my favorite genres. They allow the reader to get to know the author personally while we read and listen to their story and why of writing one. That is the exact reason why I loved An Accidental Parisian. Reading a book like this allowed me to appreciate life much more, and I count my blessings daily. Reading this book reminded me a lot of my struggles and memories because I have been in between jobs, wanting to start my life in a different location, getting married, and meeting a celebrity. However, I have never experienced the struggle of being barred from entering my home country or separated from my boyfriend (or, in my case, husband), but, like Juliet, I am still trying to find my way through life. Readers will relate to Juliet somehow, strengthening her connection with readers. Reading about Julietâs encounters gave me the adventure I always crave when reading a new book. Reading a book should give the reader experience of a lifetime, and this book fulfilled that void. Fans of Eat, Pray, Love, and Mastering the Art of French Eating will appreciate the adventure, excitement, and a sense of lifeâs purposes provided in An Accidental Parisian.Such a refreshing treat that will leave you inspired. This book gets 5 stars.

Review: The author really takes you on a journey through time in this delightful memoir. From the passing of her father, growing up in Toronto, enjoying peering in at her parents when they held festive gatherings and even the adventures of Madame Faucherre in Montpellier, it’s certainly a well written book. Romance also comes to the fore and I like the typical Frenchness portrayed in Jean Marc’s character. It’s poignantly composed and gives a real insight into her travels right from the beginning across Italy. Her dedication to learn French throughout the book is another nice touch and the trials and tribulations the language barrier causes. I also like the smattering of French quotes from philosophers and the hilarious pursuits of finding lodgings in the French capital. You really get a picture of Paris through her realistic descriptions of the cacophony of activity including the markets. And then there’s the endless job interviews, being ignored while working in various companies by fellow colleagues and all that French protocol! Yet, I can see why her love affair with Paris made her stay longer than expected. A tad long but a good all round read.
