Title: One of the most interesting
Review: As an artist I have read many books on this favorite era in art, this one is one of the best and answers many questions left dangeling by most others. There is some awkward translation, but not much of a problem. Otis Huband

Title: Paris as Centre of the Universe
Review: They are all in here – Picasso, Modigliani, Rousseau, Gertrude Stein, Duchamp, Man Ray with a sprinkling of Hemingway. The book is a series of short vignettes on the daily life in Montmartre and Montparnasse with the drugs, the poverty the sex…Sometimes I feel the author is too dismissive of the emotional toll on the lives of the women who were used/abused/discarded with regularity by these artists and some make-believe artists. And the vignettes become repetitive, but entertaining nonetheless. What is intriguing is that Paris was the centre for art, culture and experimentation from 1900 thru the 1930’s, but was gradually replaced by New York (the occupation during the war accomplished the final transfer).

Title: you better have a computer nearby
Review: An interesting book filled with names of artists, poets, and writers you never heard of. There are also a large number of well known artists, poets, and writers that lived in Paris from 1900 to 1930…some for only a short time, others for that entire time. But be aware there are no paintings from the artists discussed here and only a handful of poems. There are pictures of some of the folks in the book. But if you want more detail about almost all of them, you better have a computer nearby. The only way to fully appreciate any artist is to see his or her work, not just read about their lives, loves, their friends, and their enemies. For the most part, the famous writers of the “Lost Generation get very short shrift. There are so many other books that do all these folks more justice.Towards the end, the going gets tough. I could not wait to finish it. The long, drawn out battles and brawls between the Dadaists and the Surrealists gets extremely tiresome, especially since they are only a minor footnote in the history of art and literature. You better have a hard-core interest in this artistic era of Paris before you tackle it.

Title: Great story
Review: I wish everyone interested in history would read this book. It tells so much more than art history. Put it in your library eith Hemingway’s “A Moveable Feast.” I am glad I bought it and read it. You should to.
